Latent in Pre-chaos is video installation works that expands upon the research on the "Eunhyeongbeop" from Dongui Bogam (The Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine) (1610), which began in 2023. Choreographer He Jin Jang regards the practice of "the method of concealing the body’s form," rehearsed during times of war and epidemic 400 years ago, as a kind of score. Together with her collaborators, she engaged in speculative dialogue, literature research, movement studies, storytelling, and personal insights, culminating in a multisensory performance in August 2023 that invited the audience into this process. The remaining questions from this project were: "What were the notions of body, community, and care to our ancestors during moments of disaster and disease? What might this indigenous wisdom have to say in the current era of the 'Ontological Turn'?"

 

During July and August 2024, He Jin Jang worked with performer Sung Uk Hoh to explore the concept of “Taeyeok (what is latent in pre-chaos)” and "Hon-ryun" (the state of being before differentiation into form) from the body concepts that form the basis of Eunhyeongbeop. These concepts refers to the state of existence before a body or matter takes on its form, energy, or texture—before it acquires the qualities of Qi, form, or substance. Through literature research and movement exploration, they began to investigate what it means to exist in these state, and what kind of dance might emerge from them. This film integrates these concepts, movements, and the text-making practices they engaged in, offering the audience the possibility of experiencing the state of Taeyeok and Honryun through viewing and listening. What if these indigenous bodily perspectives of Korea can be considered somatic materials and resources that have so much uncover here and now via dancing?

<태역에 속도가 묻어있어서>는 2023년에 시작된 동의보감 ‘은형법’에 대한 연구가 확장된 영상 설치 작업이다. 400년 전 왜란과 전염병의 시대에 연습되어진 ‘몸의 형체를 숨기는 법’을 일종의 스코어로 인식한 장혜진 안무가는 공동연구자들과 사변적 대화, 문헌연구, 움직인 연구, 스토리텔링, 개인적 깨달음의 시간을 가지며, 작년 2023년 8월 멀티센소리 공연으로 발전시켜 관객을 초대했다. 이를 통해 남겨진 질문은 다음과 같았다. “재난과 질병의 순간 조상들에게 몸, 공동체, 돌봄은 무엇이었을까? 이러한 토착적 지혜가 지금 ‘존재론적 전환(Ontological Turn)’의 시대에 던질 수 있는 이야기는 무엇일까?” 2024년 7-8월, 두 달의 기간 동안 장혜진 안무가는 허성욱 퍼포머와 은형법의 배경이 되는 신체관을 천천히 살펴보았다. 우리 조상들의 토착적 신체관은 어떻게 지금 우리의 존재 방식과 평행하게 어긋나며 만나게 될까?
